Safe Patient Handling 101 (1 Credits)

  • Consider how we lift and move patients today
  • Discuss the risks associated with manual lifting
  • Review how immobility impacts the patient
  • Consider the position of OSHA, legislation, and the American Nurses Association on Safe Patient Handling
  • Assess and apply appropriate solution


The Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT)

  • Review complications of immobility and muscle weakness.
  • Consider the benefit of linking fall prevention with SPHM.
  • Introduce the Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT).
  • Describe a hypothetical patient case study so providers can gain practice  with implementation of a mobility assessment tool in their care setting.

Instructor

Nicole Hopewell

Nicole Hopewell, PT, MS, CSPHP is a Safe Patient Handling & Mobility Clinical Consultant with Hillrom. Nicole has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including acute care, outpatient rehab, women's health and acute rehab. Prior to joining Hillrom, Nicole was the Manager of a Physical & Medicine department and the Safe Patient Handling site Lead for a Level 2 trauma center and Stroke Center of Excellence for 12 years. Nicole has extensive real-life experience in the development of a successful Safe Patient Handling program from the ground up, including equipment selection & justification, education, developing the right culture, tracking metrics and supporting the day-to-day operations of a multi-faceted SPHM program in a busy trauma hospital. As a SPHM leader, she developed best practices around care of the bariatric patient, early mobility, HRO implementation and implementation of the BMAT. She is passionate about sharing best practices to improve patient and caregiver safety and organizational outcomes. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from New York University and her Master of Science in Health Services Administration from Regis University. She has also completed the Caritas Coach program through the Watson Caring Science Institute.
