Learning Objectives

Safe Patient Handling 101 (1 Credits)

  • Consider how we lift and move patients today
  • Discuss the risks associated with manual lifting
  • Review how immobility impacts the patient
  • Consider the position of OSHA, legislation, and the American Nurses Association on Safe Patient Handling
  • Assess and apply appropriate solution

The Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT) (1 Credits)

The objectives of this program are to:

  • Review complications of immobility and muscle weakness.
  • Consider the benefit of linking fall prevention with SPHM.
  • Introduce the Bedside Mobility Assessment Tool (BMAT).
  • Describe a hypothetical patient case study so providers can gain practice  with implementation of a mobility assessment tool in their care setting.

Instructor

Nicole Hopewell, PT, MS

Nicole Hopewell, PT, MS is a Safe Patient Handling (SPH) Clinical Consultant with Liko/Hill-Rom. Nicole has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including acute care, outpatient rehab, women's health and acute rehab. Prior to joining Hill-Rom, Nicole worked as the Manager of a Physical & Medicine department and the Safe Patient Handling Lead for a Level 2 trauma center and Stroke Center of Excellence in Lafayette, Colorado. Nicole has extensive real-life experience in creating a successful Safe Patient Handling program from the ground up, including equipment selection & justification, education, developing the right culture, as well as in supporting the day-to-day operations of a multi-faceted SPH program in a busy trauma hospital. She is a member of the Association of Safe Patient Handling Professionals. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy from New York University and her Master of Science in Health Services Administration from Regis University.
