Infection Prevention

White Papers

  • The Accuracy of Various Methods and Systems to Measure Hand Hygiene Compliance
    2015

Hand hygiene is a critical component of infection prevention protocols. There are a variety of both manual (i.e.direct observation) and automated methods to measure hand hygiene, with varying levels of accuracy. Direct observation is subject to various biases which impact its accuracy, and automated systems must be validated for accuracy in simulated settings, as well as clinical settings to gain the confidence of clinicians. The Hill-Rom® Hand Hygiene Compliance Solution uses badge-based locating technology to provide automatic, continuous monitoring and recording of every use of a hand-hygiene station, as well as every hand hygiene opportunity upon entry and exit from a patient room. The system has been tested for accuracy in both simulated settings and actual clinical use, with accuracy of 98% or greater in capturing hand hygiene events in both settings.

  • Increasing Hand Hygiene Compliance with a Continuous Fully-Automated Monitoring System at Three Hospitals
    2015

Hospital-acquired infections have a significant impact on patient safety and are a financial burden to healthcare facilities. Hand hygiene is a critical component of infection prevention, and yet compliance rates remain well below 50% at many hospitals. Many interventions have been designed to increase hand hygiene compliance, with limited success. Hill-Rom developed a comprehensive solution which includes technology to provide automatic, continuous monitoring of hand hygiene compliance, with customizable reporting to provide feedback in real time by unit, shift, function, and individual. The Hill-Rom® Hand Hygiene Compliance Solution also includes clinical consulting services to support a facility through the change management process. In three initial hospitals where the Hill-Rom® Hand Hygiene Compliance Solution was implemented, hand hygiene compliance increased over 250% after 10 months of use.
